Whyte Rushan I have this on CD,(with words version) and its firmly implanted in the part of my brain, that knows the words to these songs and now I am digital, I hum it every second day, and now that song with no words, god - its going faster than we ever went before, so good! Favorite track: Goddess on a Highway.

Rich Grula I listen to this all the time and wonder - where would the vocals go? It's fine without them. Favorite track: Holes.

about

In 1998, for Mercury Rev (who had become know for their arty, left-field pop), Deserter’s Songs was something of a revelation. Tweaking their reputation for harsh noisy freakouts, the album was a lush, orchestral counterpoint to the band’s catalogue at that point.

And now, Deserter's Songs has been re-mixed and remastered in a special Instrumental Edition, accentuating the orchestral cosmic-fantasia of this epic space-rock americana classic in full 3D cinematic scope! The band's long-time friend (and original bass player) Dave Fridmann has created instrumental mixes of all of the tracks excluding 'Goddess On A HiWay," which has been instrumentally mixed by Peter Katis.

Incorporating elements of folk, jazz,'60s and '70s rock, and even Disney soundtrack fantasia (The Band’s legendary Levon Helm and Garth Hudson also guested on the album) these sweeping orchestrations heralded Mercury Rev’s rebirth as purveyors of a cosmic brand of the popular American songbook. Tracks like “Holes,” "Goddess On a HiWay" and “Opus 40” are cosmic epics, whose arrangements are simultaneously grandiose and tender.

A paradoxical, unconventional record, Deserter's Songs turned heads and ended up an unexpected, worldwide hit. In 1998, the album was named “Album of the Year” by NME, MOJO and many other publications. More recently, Deserter's Songs made Pitchfork's "Top 100 Albums of the 1990's" list.

"Deserter's Songs is at once a lullaby, a trip, and a triumph." - Pitchfork
“A modern classic.” – NME
